TEXAS REHABILITATES MAN WHO MURDERED PRISON GUARD

Travis Runnels had become a light that shines bright even in the darkest of spaces

by Bob Walsh

Back in 2003 Travis Runnels, now 46, slashed the throat of a Texas state correctional officer, Stanley Wiley, 38. Allegedly Runnels was pissed because he had a job he didn't like, the janitor at the shoe factory. (At least he wasn't out chopping cotton.)

Runnels stated that he had no last words to say as they hooked him up to the IVs, but said "Woof Woof" clearly and loudly, then took four deep breaths, before the phenobarbitol hit him.

Runnel had been doing 70 years for aggravated robbery when he killed Officer Wiley.

Runnels presented no real defense. He had priors for assaults against staff. At his clemency hearing he presented 25 letters from people who asserted that Runnels had worked to make amends for what he did, stating "He has become a light that shines bright even in the darkest of spaces." There will probably be plenty of light where he is heading. Heat too.
