A former New York public school principal who once cancelled a Black History Month assignment and her teachers are embroiled in a bitter legal battle, firing allegations of racism at each other.

It started when now former Bronx middle school principal Patricia Catania who is white, stopped an English teacher from carrying out a Black History Month assignment in 2018.

Catania argued the instructor, Mercedes Liriano, was out of her league teaching history, although Liriano argued she had taught the lesson in years past. She made her complaint public, recruiting students, teachers and parents to her side in demanding that Catania step down from IS 224.

School officials ended up demoting her to another school, and with a pay cut.

However, she wasn't done and fired off a $22 million lawsuit alleging Liriano and others were racist and had conspired to get her replaced at the Bronx school with a black principal. She also likens her being accused of being racist to calling 'Mahatma Ghandi a violent man' in a sworn legal filing.

Liriana, who is black, and the other teachers have now counter-sued, accusing Catania of discrimination.
