A large group of naval aviators has sent a letter up the chain asking to be armed while on base. They point out that, while on the ground, their personal safety is seen to by contract rent-a-cops whose training and fitness level is often inferior to the people they are protecting. It seems odd that the military trusts these people with multi-million dollar aircraft that carry thousands of pounds of nasty things but won't trust them with a pistol on the ground. In fact on of those shot by the goat fucker at Pensacola was a small-arms instructor and captain of the academy rifle team. He was standing watch at the time of the shooting, armed with zilch.
I seem to recall that a few years back when recruiting stations were being attacked an order was issued permitting recruiters to carry weapons. I have not heard of too many recruiters going apeshit and randomly shooting people on the street. Perhaps this is something whose time has come. It is at least worth of serious consideration.
