THE DEATH OF AN INSTITUTION

Riker's Island To Go Away, Maybe-Probably

by Bob Walsh

Bill de Blasio, the commissar of the city of New York, has a ten-year plan to close down the toilet known as Riker's Island and replace it with de-centralized jails in the boroughs.

As one might expect, the NIMBY crowd is screaming bloody murder. They don't mind living by a court house. Living by a jail is another thing altogether.

The current plan is to close Riker's down sometime between 2024 and 2027, well after Commissar de Blasio is long gone.

In addition all under-19 (not 18) year-old commitments will be moved to juvenile detention, no matter what their crime or history.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Riker's could become a money-making tourist attraction like Alcatraz.
