At one time, before it's financial crash-and-burn, Stockton had the only Class 1 fire department west of the Mississippi. It isn't any more, due to staffing cutbacks and other issues, but it is still pretty good.
Erik Newman, 53, is the Chief of the department. He was arrested at city hall on Thursday and turned over to the custody of the Turlock PD. He was arrested on felony domestic violence charges. Last I heard he was still in custody pending $50,000 bail and had been placed on paid administrative leave. He was the department's fourth chief in eight years.
As far as the good timing part, he announced back in April that he would be retiring as of July 1. Early this year he was in contention to be the Fire Chief of San Francisco. As a straight man his chances were thin but since he is not White he might have had a chance. Anyway he didn't get the gig.
At least the city will not have to spend any money actually investigating any administrative action against him since he will be gone in less than ten days anyway.
