On Wednesday, the St. Louis Blues stunned a home crowd in Boston by defeating the Bruins in game 7 of their playoff series to win the NHL’s coveted Stanley Cup.

The Blues left no doubt about which was the better team, brating the Bruins 4-1.

This was the first Stanley Cup win for the Blues in the franchise’s 52-year history.

St. Louis was in last place of the Central Division on January 3, but then went on to win 30 of its final 45 regular season games to gain a spot the playoffs as the fifth seed in the Western Conference. They defeated the Dallas Stars in seven games and then the San Jose Sharks in six to win the conference championship.

The Stanley Cup was first awarded in 1893, making it the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a North American professional sports franchise.

The cup is also the hardest of all sports trophies to win. The playoffs began on April 10. Playoff game after playoff game, the NHL players smash each other into the unforgiving wooden boards that surround an ice hockey rink. The eventual winning players truly deserve to have their names engraved on that elegant trophy.

So, after 20 playoff games, hail to the by now black and blue Blues!
