THE RULES ARE NOT THAT DAMN HARD TO REMEMBER

By Bob Walsh

It’s really pretty easy. 1) All guns are loaded. 2) Never let your muzzle cover anything you aren’t willing to shoot. 3) Be sure of your target and your backstop.

Additional subset to #2 and #3. Infant humans are not good backstops and most people are not interested in shooting them.

An 11-month old girl was shot in a home in Petaluma, CA on Saturday, apparently accidentally by her father. Daddy was clearing his gun when it discharged. The muzzle was pointing at the baby’s back. The child suffered a thru-and-thru, which she is almost certain to survive according to the cops and medical people.

Daddy was, at least allegedly, clearing the weapon prior to leaving the house with his wife. He had planned to leave the unloaded weapon at the home.

The local constabulary say they are confident this was an unintentional accident and are not contemplating further action.
