SHAMEFUL POLITICIZING THE MURDER OF MOLLIE TIBBETTS

As soon as it was announced that an illegal immigrant had been arrested for the murder of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts, President Trump seized the moment to trumpet his immigration stance, followed by his son Donald Jr.

The body of missing Iowa college student Mollie Tibbetts was found on Tuesday,August 21 and Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was arrested for her murder. On Wednesday, Trump said in a video posted on Twitter:

“Mollie Tibbetts, an incredible young woman, is now permanently separated from her family. A person came in from Mexico illegally and killed her. We need the wall. We need our immigration laws changed.”

And on Friday, Trump’s son Donald Jr. wrote an op-ed in which he condemned the media and the Democrats for not making a big deal out of Rivera’s illegality. He also said:

“Despite what some Democrats may wish in the depths of their hearts, Mollie was murdered by an illegal alien and her murder would never have happened if we policed our southern border properly.”

White supremacists quickly jumped in on their websites with racist declarations about rapes and murders committed by illegal aliens.

The shameful politicizing of Mollie’s murder upset her father. Rob Tibbetts wrote his own op-ed in which he said:

“At the outset, politicians and pundits used Mollie’s death to promote various political agendas … do not appropriate Mollie’s soul in advancing views she believed were profoundly racist. The act grievously extends the crime that stole Mollie from our family.”

To imply that a wall would have prevented Mollie’s murder is ridiculous. Even if we had a 20-foot high wall standing along the entire border with Mexico, Latinos will always find a way to enter this country illegally, albeit in much smaller numbers. And as it stands now with no wall, Americans are much more likely to be raped, robbed and murdered by white citizens than by illegals from Latin America.

There are good cases to be made against illegal immigration, but shamefully politicizing the death of a murder victim is not one of them.
