Scott Hill, 26, and Megan Karl, 33 were thrown into the slammer thanks to Karl’s 3-year-old daughter. They were pulled over by NY state troopers Thursday in the town of New Scotland. The troopers immediately observed several roaches – not the crawling type, but marijuana cigarette butts – in the car’s ashtray.
One of the troopers took Karl’s daughter out of her car seat because she was not safely secured. As a reward for the officer’s concern, the toddler reached under the front seat and grabbed a pouch which she handed to the trooper. Voila! The pouch contained a bag of marijuana, a smoking pipe, and a metal grinder.
Karl and Hill were both charged with endangering the welfare of a child, which in New York is a misdemeanor. Hill has also been charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, which is considered a violation, not a crime. After a court appearance, Hill was released to supervision of Albany County Probation and Karl was released on her own recognizance.
The toddler was turned over to relatives and Albany County Child Protective Services was notified about the arrests.
The least the authorities can do is to make the toddler an honorary NY state trooper.
