California Senator Dianne Feinstein’s scarlet letter which has been widely reported as a bombshell turns out to be a dud.
The letter claiming that Kavanaugh attempted to rape a girl while he was a 17-year-old student at an all-boys Catholic prep school is reported to have originated at Stanford University and may not even been written by the alleged victim, but by someone she told her story to.
Texas Senator John Cornyn mocked the letter by tweeting:
Let me get this straight: this is statement about secret letter regarding a secret matter and an unidentified person. Right.
I will add: the FBI already performed and has reported on a background investigation on the nominee and this has been made available to all Senators on the Judiciary Committee.
And a letter written on September 14 and signed by 65 women, defended Kavanaugh’s character. Many of these women knew Kavanaugh when he attended the prep school. The letter directed to the Senate Judiciary Committee said:
We are women who have known Brett Kavanaugh for more than 35 years and knew him while he attended high school between 1979 and 1983. For the entire time we have known Brett Kavanaugh, he has behaved honorably and treated women with respect. We strongly believe it is important to convey this information to the Committee at this time.
Brett attended Georgetown Prep, an all-boys high school in Rockville, Maryland. He was an outstanding student and athlete with a wide circle of friends. Almost all of us attended all-girls high schools in the area. We knew Brett well through social events, sports, church, and various other activities. Many of us have remained close friends with him and his family over the years. Through the more than 35 years we have known him, Brett has stood out for his friendship, character, and integrity. In particular, he has always treated women with decency and respect. That was true when he was in high school, and it has remained true to this day.
The scarlet letter said that when Trump announced his nomination of Judge Kavanaugh, it brought back vivid memories of the attempted rape so that the victim had to seek psychological help. I would say that whether the victim or someone else composed that letter, the writer is indeed in need of some serious head shrinking for a sexual assault that never occurred.
I think it is fair to say that Feinstein’s 11th hour bombshell has turned out to be a dud.
