Trump claims that a reported Puerto Rican death toll of 3,000 in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria is a Democratic conspiracy against him

A study by George Washington University that was funded by the Puerto Rican Government show that some 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Prior to that, the official death toll had been set at 64while other reports from the Puerto Rican government said the number was closer to 1,400.
President Trump took credit for the very lowest death toll. On Thursday, as Hurricane Florence approached the Carolinas, Trump claimed the 3,000 number represented a Democratic conspiracy to discredit him. He tweeted:
When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000.
This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!
Trump just can’t keep his big mouth shut. It’s not the Democrats, but Trump’s big mouth that has been conspiring against him.
For anyone who saw the pictures of Maria’s devastation, a death toll of only 64 would have been all but impossible to swallow. Even today, one year later, much of Puerto Rico still remains devastated. Trump blames the Puerto Rican government for that. He is probably right there. In any case though, a death toll of 3,000 seems far more likely than one of only 64.
A prudent president would not have referred to Puerto Rico in assuring residents of the Carolinas how well he is ready to respond to Hurricane Florence. But Trump is not prudent and he cannot stop his big mouth from conspiring against him.
