In
recent days seven officers not yet eligible for retirement have
resigned from the Minneapolis P D. It has not been announced whether or
not they were moving to another department or just leaving
Minneapolis.
There
are efforts under way to amend the city charter which would enable the
city to drastically cut or even eliminate their police department. As
it currently stands it needs a vote of the people or a 100% vote of the
council with the mayor agreeing to cut the police department below a
population based minimum number, currently 753 officers. There are
about 790 police officers in Minneapolis right now.
