Penny
Lane, the street in Liverpool made famous by the Beatles, may soon be
no more. The woke locals are screaming, possibly correctly, that it is
named after James Penny, a well known slave trader and opponent to the
abolition of slavery in Great Britain. So far the jury is out on the
facts but if it does turn out that it was named after James Penny the
street may be renamed.
Wouldn't
it be a kick if it turns out it was named after James Cash Penny, the
well known American retailer? Of course, since the street name is at
least a couple of hundred years old when James Cash Penny was born, that
probably isn't going to turn out to be correct.
Maybe
they could rename it Shilling Lane. Or Thruppence Blvd. Or James
Brown street. Or they could name it after me. I have never had a
street named after me. Maybe they will solicit nominations.
Professor Howard Katz Avenue. That has a ring to it.
