Gavin Newsom, the HMFIC of the formerly great state of California, is now stating that he wants (intends) to close down two prisons before he leaves office. He has not identified which ones, but it is very likely that San Quentin will be on the list. He has already ordered the execution chamber closed and dismantled, which will make it very difficult to start executions up again (death row is mostly at San Quentin) and San Quentin has the highest maintenance operations costs of any of the state's prisons per capita. Also the real estate is very, very valuable.
Since Gavin is convinced, or at least SAYS he is convinced, that the state's wonderful and marvelous rehabilitation programs will substantially reduce crime in CA we don't need prisons any more anyway, do we? (Except to lock up evil racist Republicans of course.)
