Assuming I am counting right (and I might not be, I ran out of Green Death this morning and that messes up my concentration) there are about 22 weeks until we pick between the Orange Man and the Senile Man to either run the country, or run the country into the ground, depending on how you look at it.
If the country goes collectively insane we will also in effect be picking the second female President of the United States. (Edith Wilson was the first.) This is of course because Senile Joe The Hairsniffer has promised that he absolutely and positively will have a female running mate and the progressive-psycho wing of the party will NEVER let him back away from that one.
I am still not absolutely convinced that Joe will make it to the finish line. He may suffer from completely brain-fade. He may stroke out. (Remember Edith Wilson.) He may drown in his bath tub or simply disappear, like Judge Crater.
This far out of course the polls are essentially meaningless. If the Orange Man manages to pull an actual Covid-19 cure out of his anal orifice fairly early in the game and the economy bounces back big time I strongly suspect Trump will do well. If there is a very nasty second wave and the economy stays in the crapper, the middle may go in another direction.
Roughly 40% of the voting population will vote for anything with a D next to it's name. A warm body, a three-legged dog, whatever. Roughly 40% will vote for anything with an R next to it's name. The fight will be in the middle. Mostly.
I don't think the Trump faithful will abandon him. I think it is completely possible that a fair chunk of the Democrat-Socialist party woke wing could bail out on Senile Joe if they perceive he is not woke enough. Trouble is, a significant amount of the old-line Democrat voters are not insane and may very well have a problem with the direction he is headed in. That is not to say they will vote for the Orange Man, but they may stay home.
Also the Bernie Bros are still making loud noises about the party structure loosing their votes if they leave Bernie and his values flapping in the wind.
Another possible interesting point is the fact that there are a LOT more Republican senators up for reelection this time around that Democrats. Pressure from the down-ticket side MAY drag out more Democrats. Or not.
As I type this it is exactly 3 months until the Democrat-Socialist National Convention (assuming they don't all die from Covid-19). It should be a huge amount of fun to watch the cat-fight for #2 over the next three months. You have to watch SOMETHING, there just ins't going to be that much NASCAR on TV between now and then.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Just a word about Edith Wilson. She was never actually President of the United States. She was married to President Woodrow Wilson when he suffered a serious stroke in 1919. From then on she managed the country's affairs for him until the end of his term in 1921.
