On July 2 the cops in Douglas County, Colorado, went after Austin Benson, 29. He had stolen a vehicle and was shooting at other vehicles while he was being pursued.
He stopped at an unoccupied camp site and began yelling for no obvious reason. A family happened by in their vehicle to see what the problem was and Benson fired on them.
Nearby retied cop Wesley Mattox, 51, happened to be camping with his wife when he heard the hoorah. He went to see what the fuss was about and the situation rapidly deteriorated. Benson opened fire on Mattox. Mattox took out his AR-15 and shot back, emptying the gun. Benson crashed into a tree, and Mattox took out a second AR-15 and shot a few more times for good measure. Benson was hit several times, but is likely to survive. He is facing six charges of attempted first degree murder.
Since it did not happen in CA it is likely that Mattox will be OK legally.
