A Greenfield mother and her girlfriend face neglect charges after authorities say they gave her son marijuana as an incentive for good behavior.
Melissa Burton, 36, and Susan Glascock, 36, also took marijuana away from Burton's son when he misbehaved, according to a probable cause affidavit filed last week in Hancock Superior Court.
"(The boy) advised that Melissa would ground him from marijuana if he did something bad, and Melissa and Susan would reward him with marijuana if he did something good," Greenfield officer J. Tomas wrote in the affidavit.
Glascock "even taught him how to roll marijuana," Thomas wrote.
Greenfield police were called to the family's apartment on June 25 after a fight between the boy and Glascock.
Prosecutors said the 270-pound woman slapped and tackled the 100-pound boy, pinning him to the floor before Burton finally pulled her off.
When the boy got to his feet, prosecutors said he punched Glascock then fled from the apartment. Officers found him near the home walking on the road.
At the police station, the boy's grandfather told investigators that he saw Burton and Glascock give the boy marijuana.
"(The grandfather) advised that he 'lost it,'" according to the probable cause affidavit. "They told (the grandfather) that they would not do that again."
Prosecutors said Burton and Glascock told a Department of Child Services case worker they gave the boy marijuana. Glascock said it was once; Burton admitted to numerous times, according to the affidavit.
The boy told police they had given him marijuana at least 50 times in the past three months.
Prosecutors charged both women with felony child neglect. Glascock faces an additional misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.
Felony child neglect is punishable by six months to two and a half years in prison.
