London Breed is the current Alcalde of the People's Republic of San Francisco. She wants very, very, very badly to get some high-profile street cred by opening a Safe Injection site in the city, so they can have even more used needles to interlace with the piles of human shit dotting the sidewalks.
She was, however, advised by the city attorney that under the circumstances that is a really stupid idea. The circumstances are that SF has poked Trump in the eye egregiously and publicly quite a lot lately and the Safe Injection site is clearly a violation of federal law. She could therefore, if she goes ahead, count on being arrested by the DEA (along with the SF public health director) and thrown into federal custody so fast it would take three days for their shoes to catch up with them.
The city attorney also pointed out to them that Jeff Sessions has made a big deal out of prosecuting habitual drug dealers as capital offenders under already existing federal law. Homie ain't playin.
Barbara Garcia, Director of the S. F. Dept. of Public Health, had PREVIOUSLY announced the desire to have two privately funded Safe Injection sites running in the Tenderloin district by the end of July. They are now talking about one model (i.e. fake) injection site, for media purposes, set up in the near future.
SF guestimates that there are well over 20,000 active junkies in their bailiwick. State Senator Scott Weiner tried to get a bill passed that would shield property owners, employees and junkies from arrest under STATE law at Safe Injection sites. The bill actually failed to pass. Just goes to show you the formerly great state of California hasn't gone completely down the toilet. Yet. It is, however, circling the bowl.
