MIKE POMPEO-NORTH KOREAN TALKS DID NOT GO WELL

North Korea accuses U.S. of having a ‘gangster-like’ attitude.

After two days of talks with North Korean officials in Pyongyang, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned to the U.S. empty handed. Instead of solidifying an agreement on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, North Korea accused the U.S. of having a ‘gangster-like’ attitude. The foreign ministry released the following statement:

“The attitude and demands from the U.S. side during the high-level talks were nothing short of deeply regrettable. We expected that the U.S. side would come with productive measures conducive to building trust in line with the spirit of the North-U.S. summit and [we] considered providing something that would correspond to them. The U.S. just came out with such unilateral and gangster-like denuclearization demands as [complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization], declaration and verification that go against the spirit of the North-U.S. summit meeting.”

Nevertheless, Pompeo said the talks were productive and North Korea’s chief representative at the talks said his country was still committed to denuclearization.

The two sides agreed to hold further talks on bringing the bodies of American soldiers buried in North Korea back to the U.S. In return for returning the bodies, the North Koreans want the United States to take “simultaneous” actions of expanding bilateral exchanges, and to end the Korean War in July. However, the U.S. does not appear willing to end that war just yet.

Not to worry though. The armistice talks between the U.S. and North Korea back in the 50s dragged on for two years.
