FORMER PRIEST GETS LIFE FOR 1960 RAPE-MURDER

by Bob Walsh

John Bernard Felt is 85 years old and used to be a priest. He left the priesthood in 1970 to marry. Among other things on his CV was a stint in priest rehab. He later became in charge of assigning priests to specific parishes and helped cover up the abuses of Father James Porter, who was sentenced to prison after molesting more than 100 victims.

Felt's victim, Irene Garza, 27, was a former beauty queen and school teacher in Felt's parish. She had been beaten unconscious, raped, then suffocated.

He had been found guilty of another assault and fined $500 shortly before Ms. Garza's death. The Hidalgo County, Texas, jury took four hours to bring in a verdict.
