MY BULLSHITOMETER IS GOING OFF ON THIS ONE

by Bob Walsh

It all depends on who you ask. I have heard that as much as 10% of the general public is either gay or bi. However, this statistic comes from people and groups who have a vested interest in "alternative lifestyles" being considered to be as mainstream as possible. My own guess (for what that may be worth to you) is the real number is more like 3%.

A study released by UCLA this past Wednesday asserts that more than one fourth of school children ages 12-17 believe that they are perceived to be "gender nonconforming" by their peers. This does not of course mean that they are gender nonconforming, merely that they think their peers think they are.

This study was based on 360 interviews throughout CA. My limited knowledge of statistics tells me this is a fairly small sample to try to make a fair curve off of.
