CA IS LOOKING AT A HARD DEADLINE

by Bob Walsh

The legislature of the formerly great state of California has one week to pass a budget to the governor.  In years gone by that was routinely ignored.  However, after a general disgust by the taxpayers, a few years back a law was passed that cuts the pay off for the legislature if they do not get the budget passed by the constitutional deadline of June 15.  That has actually happened a time or two and the rapacious bastards in the legislature do not like it when they don't get to gorge themselves at the public trough.

The problem right now is the legislature is trying to pretend that the money fairy is going to give them a shitload of money.  Unfortunately the congress of the United States has NOT voted any sort of aid package to state governments, and is certainly NOT going to do so prior to June 15.  This leaves the greedy shits in the legislature in an awkward position.

If they have big enough balls they can simply continue to pretend Congress is going to give them buckets of money and balance their budget with that proposal.  It would be dishonest as hell, but that does not tend to bother politicians.  If they don't do that, they have to find about $54 billion from under a rock or in someone's sock drawer.  Or else they have to drag out the chain saw and axe and CUT shit.  Not trim.  Cut.  Lay off cops.  Lay off fire fighters.  Cut back on money to schools.  Cut back on hiring whores and buying booze.  We are talking serious shit here.  If the legislature actually moves to lay off civil service workers or cut their pay (it is technically difficult to cut pay) the unions may quit giving legislators money and may quit voting for them, then they will loose the best gig they will ever have or could ever hope to have.  (A lot of the members of the legislature are really fairly dumb people and the only thing they are good at is taking money and buying votes for themselves.  They have no other real skill set.)

I will try to keep you in the loop.
