OFF DUTY C/O STOPS BANK ROBBER

by Bob Walsh

A correctional officer who was off-duty and in line at a bank, broke up a bank robbery recently.

The officer, Thomas Corcoran, works at SCI-Mercer in Pennsylvania. He was in line at the bank when he noticed a guy behind him wearing a back back and a mask. (Bank robbers wait in line???) The officer dropped out of line, then pulled his weapon on the suspect, ordering him to drop the back pack and hit the deck. He did so, but later fled, before authorities showed up.

I do not know the legal status of Correctional Officers in PA. In CA they can carry a gun, but have no authority beyond the scope of their employment.

It was the second bank the robber attempted to nail that day.

The officer received a certificate of recognition from his department for his actions. In CA he probably would have been fired.
