Two denizens of death row in the formerly great state of California self-rehabilitated within hours of each other over the last weekend in separate incidents.
Andrew Urdiales, 54, was found dead in his cell late Friday evening. He was facing a death sentence for killing five women in Orange County. He had previously been convicted of two murders in Illinois and sentenced to death but his sentence was commuted.
His California murders occurred between 1988 and 1995 while he was a marine serving at various bases in SoCal. The Illinois murders occurred in the 1990s. He was sentenced to death for those murders in 2004. He has been on death row in the adjustment center since his intake on October 12. He was in a one-man cell. Even though his cause of death is not officially known they are pretty sure he self-rehabilitated.
Dead murderer #2 was Virenda Govin, 51, who was found toes up in his cell Sunday evening. He murdered four people in L A county and then set their house on fire. HE has been on the row since January of 05. His brother joined him in September of 05.
Since capital punishment has been theoretically re-established in the formerly great state of California in 1978 13 killers have been executed in California, none since 2006. In that time 79 have died of natural causes, 25 have self-rehabilitated and two have been executed in other states. Others have been murdered in custody but the state has not supplied numbers on that little detail. The most recent one was last month.
