Borderland Beat reports that a cellphone thief was lynched in Puebla, Mexico. The man, 25-30, had stolen some cellphones and injured three people. Angry merchants caught the man and beat him up. Then they poured gasoline on him and set him on fire. He was dead bythe time the police arrived.

In another Puebla case Thursday, angry residents lynched a 25-year-old man for stealing from a home. They stripped the thief and hung him by the hands on a road sign. Then they beat him to death. They left a card with the body which read: “This happened to me because I am a thief.”

These brought the total number of alleged criminals lynched in Puebla to 17 so far this year. Mexican authorities say the lynching of lawbreakers is occurring because people are frustrated over criminals not being brought to justice.

And they say the Saudi practice of chopping off the hand of a thief is cruel.
