P C NOW S O L IN CALIFORNIA

by Bob Walsh

No I do not mean Politically Correct. I mean Protective Custody. The prison system of the formerly great state of California (that I worked for for 24 years) has come to the conclusion that protective custody (now called Sensitive Needs but it is the same thing) has become so violent and full of fake drop-outs and general purpose lops, lames and assholes that it is not worth continuing the program.

The current population of the entire system is about 1/3 sensitive needs inmates.

During 2014 there were eleven inmate on inmate murders in the system. Ten of those were in sensitive needs programs. Most of the dead were sex offenders.

The state prison system hospitals have no "sensitive needs" programs. The general population institutions will begin phasing out of the programs in the near future. The current director, Scott Kiernan, acknowledges that it will probably not be possible to fully eliminate the program, but he believes it can be reduced by a very large degree without a corresponding violence increase.
