VIVA ZAPATA

by Bob Walsh

Maria de Jesus Patricio (aka MariChuy) is running for President of the Estados Unidos Mexico. She is a native woman from Chiapas and her primary support comes from flat-out Zapatista rebels.

She needs to get 866,000 signatures to get on the ballot for next year's presidential election. She probably won't get them and if she does she almost certainly will not win. She is, however, emblematic of a significant push from the native underclass in Mexico. There are about 6 million Indigenous People in Mexico and another 4 million who identify with the group via community or extended family. It is important to note that the media down there refuses to even refer to her as a candidate. They call her a spokesperson for indigenous people.

I wish the lady luck.
