When you are 93- years old with only a
dog for a companion, there are few things to brighten your day. One of
those things happened to me Friday when one of my former students from
back in the 70s paid me a visit.
And that student was
some one special. He was truly one of my best students ever. He is a
former US Army Ranger with combat service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He
was also a sergeant with Houston PD's SWAT team. As a Houston police
officer he exemplified everything an outstanding cop is expected to be.
Lee Lawrence really made my day. Actually he made my week ... no, make that my month.
We
talked for two hours, mostly about the sad state our country finds
itself in at this time. We are especially concerned that the protesters
are making it appear as though all law enforcement officers are racists
and that the police beat up and kill blacks only because they are
black.
Lee retired several years ago and moved with
his family to the Hill Country. I haven't seen him since, that is until
Friday. He used to visit me and my wife regularly before he retired.
My dear departed wife and my son always thought the world of Lee.
So, it was a most pleasant surprise when he came to visit me Friday. And for sure, Lee really brightened my day!
