Several states grant driver's licenses to undocumented democrats, formerly known as illegal aliens. The formerly great state of California has been doing so for years. New York just started. Various media outlets asserted yesterday that the Dept. of Homeland Security is "reviewing" the legality of this practice.
I admit having mixed feelings about this. Illegal aliens are going to drive. A LOT of them, because we encourage them to come here and stay here. If they have a driver's license they can get insurance, if they want to. Frequently they don't, but they can and sometimes do. Without a licenses it is pretty much impossible to get insurance.
So, how good is the trade-off. If I could wave my magic wand and make the decision myself without further review, I would say NO. That being said, I understand the opposite side and it is not totally unreasonable. I believe that any sort of official recognition to the presence of illegal aliens gives further psychological and legal "permission" for them to be here. But that's just my opinion, for what that may be worth to you.
