WHAT IF NETANYAHU LOSES?

American Jews despise Netanyahu because he is a friend of President Trump

Another round of Israeli elections will be held next month and it is not a given that Netanyahu will retain the premiership. But how will it effect the relationship of American Jews with Israel if Netanyahu remains Israel’ prime minister.

Support for Israel among American Jews has been dwindling in recent years. Nearly 80 percent of America’s Jews are set-in-concrete Democrats. Because Netanyahu is a right-wing politician, they have been at odds with him, and thus with Israel, ever since the second time he was elected prime minister in 2009.

America’s liberal Jews hate Netanyahu because they believe he is an obstacle to peace. They despise him because they think he disrespected President Obama and because he is a friend of President Trump.

There are those who predict that another Netanyahu win will sever the last ties between Israel and liberal American Jews. But what if Netanyahu loses next month? Will that reverse the deteriorating ties? Not hardly!

Whoever, other than Netanyahu, wins will not satisfy the peaceniks. First and foremost, Israel must look after its security needs because you cannot make peace with people who want to obliterate the Jewish state. And the next prime minister will make sure to be a friend of President Trump.

What if by some electoral armageddon Israel elects a left-wing prime minister? It won’t make much difference. The ties between America’s Jews and Israel will hang by a thread at best. Why?

Jonathan Tobin has the answer. In an Israel Hayom column on Sunday, Tobin wrote: “At the heart of the breach between Israel and American Jewry is a declining sense of Jewish peoplehood among the latter as assimilation and widespread intermarriage have created a community that is no longer that interested in Israel or, frankly, the person leading it.”

Not only are the ties between American Jews and Israel being severed, but assimilation has led to outright hostility toward the Jewish state. It appears as though the majority of Jewish students on our country’s colleges and universities have joined their Palestinian ‘brothers and sisters’ in calling for BDS.

And here’s a warning for America’s assimilating Jews. You cannot hide your Jewish roots. Among the first Jews shipped off to Nazi concentration camps were those who had intermarried and no longer considered themselves to be Jewish.
