JUDGE ORDERS PG&E EXECS TO VISIT FIRE-RAVAGED TOWN OF PARADISE

by Bob Walsh

U. S. District Court Judge William Alsup has ordered the members of the BOD of PG&E to visit what is left of the town of Paradise. The city of 26,000 was essentially destroyed by a wildfire apparently caused by PG&E equipment in November of last year.

The judge is overseeing the criminal probation of PG&E since a fatal gas line explosion in 2010 in San Bruno. In the aftermath of that inferno it was discovered that the utility cheated on its pipeline safety surveys.

The new board will also meet with city officials in San Bruno. The board has pretty much completely been replaced since their bankruptcy filing in January.

The judge also ordered that PG&E stop paying dividends until they have demonstrated a sufficient financial commitment to their new fire safety plans, including inspection of power lines and rights-of-way and major tree removal along their rights-of-way.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Tree removal? How do California's environment-nuts feel about that?
