EVEN A BROKEN CLOCK IS RIGHT TWICE A DAY

by Bob Walsh

I am not a huge fan of one-party rule, no matter what the party. That being said once in a while anybody can get something right.

The senate of the formerly great state of California has just forwarded to the assembly, on a strict 24-10 party-line vote, an anti-antivaccer bill.

The new bill would greatly restrict the ability of parents to send their rugrats to school without vaccinations. Exemptions would be limited to persons who have actually been examined by a medical doctor and who have an actual, verifiable condition which would tend to argue against vaccination. This could include an extreme alergy to the medium or some other medical condition which makes the student's immune system depressed. This exemption program would grant exemption to less than 1% of the student body. Currently many districts have exemption rates of way over 20%. Herd immunity does not kick in unless roughly 95% of the herd is immune.

The new plan gives the state department of health the final approval over such exemptions.

At the moment it seems very likely that the bill will pass to Governor Newsom's desk.
