A car burglar is now a well-armed thief after breaking into an Opa-locka police car in a Pembroke Pines neighborhood and stealing an assault rifle, fully loaded magazines and other gear.
The break-in happened about 3:20 a.m. Tuesday in the Sunswept neighborhood near Taft Street and 86th Avenue, police said.
“This is a very brazen burglar to have targeted a marked police vehicle,” said Capt. Al Xiques, of the Pembroke Pines Police Department.
Images of the lanky, tattooed suspect were caught on a surveillance recording and police believe he is responsible for other car burglaries in the same vicinity on the same night.
“We don’t believe this burglar acted alone,” Xiques said.
Aside from the AR-15 assault rifle and three fully loaded magazines, the culprit also stole a Taser, cartridges, a tactical vest with police markings and a 16-round .45-caliber magazine.
The suspect was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed about 160 pounds. He had a full-sleeve tattoo covering his right arm.
Investigators urge anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about the burglary to call 911.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The description failed to mention one itty bitty detail … the suspect is black.
