ODD RESULT FROM GHOST SHIP TRIAL

At Least I Think It's Odd

by Bob Walsh

The jury is in on the Ghost Ship fire that killed 36 people in Oakland nearly three years ago. You might recall there was originally a plea bargain but it sparked so much outrage among the general public and the victim's families that the judge threw it out and it went to trial.

One of the two defendants, Max Harris, got a complete walk. Not guilty on 36 counts. The second defendant, Derick Almena, got a hung jury with a 10-2 split, though I don't know which way the split went.

I have no idea whether or not Alameda County will retry the case.

A fair amount of the media who followed the case were very puzzled as to how the jury could come to this conclusion considering the evidence. I guess in Oakland nobody is ever guilty of anything any more. Maybe that is why it is the buttcrack of California.
