GROUNDSKEEPERS DEMAND PROTECTION FROM HOMELESS

by Bob Walsh

The grounds of the state capitol in the formerly great state of California are really very nice. The state employs 20 full-time groundskeepers to help keep it that way. Over the last month or so five of them have been assaulted by homeless people that more or less live on the grounds. The bums are apparently very bothered when people "move their stuff" or even look at them strange, or want to trim the bushes where they are sleeping, or pissing, or whatever. These homeless folks are for the most part mentally ill drug addicts and can be dangerous.

One of these victims is still in the hospital from an assault a few days ago.

They want to start carrying pepper spray for some limited amount of protection. So far the state is unwilling. They are talking about a job action to underline and reinforce their issue. Its a damn shame that's what it takes to make the legislature see it is a problem. Since the members park in an underground garage under the building they don't have to interact with the smelly, nasty homeless people in the same way the peons have to, so maybe they just don't see the problem.
