BIBLE-THUMPING SUPERVISOR COSTS SAN DIEGO BIG BUCKS

by Bob Walsh

Sheila Beale works for the city of San Diego. She apparently was, by any reasonable definition, an aggressive bible thumper, and brought her bible to work with her.

Back in 2017 her subordinate, Rasean Johnson, filed a federal court suit against her alleging violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, freedom of religion. Among other things Ms. Beale allegedly urged workers to go to church, opposed same-sex marriage and asserted that non-believers will go to hell. She also led prayer sessions (apparently at work) and tried to pressure subordinates, including Johnson, to read the bible and attend church.

Attorneys for the city have agreed to cough up $298k to Johnson and $267k to his lawyers. They lost a jury verdict on the case and decided to settle rather than appeal.

Part of the claim is based on the city allegedly retaliating against Johnson when he filed a grievance back in 2015 on the matter. Instead of taking action against the supervisor the city demoted Johnson and moved him to a less desirable job.

The lord moves in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. I guess the lord wanted the city of San Diego to cough up $565,000 dollars to show that one of his (her?) followers is a jackass.
