THE ARROGANCE OF POWER

How Nemesis Follows Hubris

by Bob Walsh

Mike Peterson was the District Attorney of Contra Costa County, mostly a bedroom community east of San Francisco. The gig pays $250,000 per year and has a lot of perqs and power so it appeals to a certain sort of person. Peterson is also an arrogant slug and a criminal.

On Wednesday of last week the state A. G. charged him with 13 felonies relating to him using his reelection funds as a personal piggy bang and lying like a big dog about it.

He might be an arrogant asshole, but he isn't a stupid, arrogant asshole. He made himself a hell of a plea deal. He copped to one count of perjury and resigned. The A. G. dismissed the rest. He got 250 hours of community service and three years probation.

Peterson was first elected in 2010 and ran unopposed in 2014. He siphoned off about $45,000 in campaign funds for personal use.

I wonder if the asshole will even loose his law license? Power protects power, even asshole power, so I wouldn't bet on it.
