NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick has compared police officers to fugitive slave patrolmen after a Minnesota cop was acquitted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a black motorist.

Kaepernick, who famously protested police brutality by refusing to stand during the national anthem last season, tweeted an image over the weekend of a police badge beside a fugitive slave patrol.

The image read: 'You can't ignore your history. Always remember who they are.'

He was responding to the news on Friday that Officer Jeronimo Yanez was not guilty of murdering 32-year-old Philando Castile at traffic stop in a St Paul suburb last year.

Yanez shot Castile five times just seconds after Castile informed him he was carrying a gun. The officer testified that Castile was pulling his gun out of his pocket despite his commands not to do so.

The defense also argued Castile, who had a permit for the weapon, was high on marijuana and said that affected his actions.

The case garnered immediate attention because Castile's girlfriend streamed the aftermath live on Facebook.

Kaepernick captioned his tweet: 'The quarterback captioned the image: 'A system that perpetually condones the killing of people, without consequence, doesn't need to be revised, it needs to be dismantled!'

It has been retweeted more than 32,000 times.

Slave patrols were common in southern US states where white men would monitor and enforce discipline on black slaves.

Kaepernick had earlier tweeted: 'My heart aches for Philando's family.'
