Ken Turnage II was the Chairman of the Planning Commission in the city of Antioch, CA. It is a very nice, smallish city on the edge of San Francisco Bay. Friday night the city council voted unanimously to remove him from his position.
He asserted on FaceBook that the homeless, old and chronically ill members of society should just be allowed to die off to reduce the burden on society of keeping them alive.
Two hours later he pulled the post, but refused to back down from the position, asserting that his personal opinion had no bearing on his duties as a planning commissioner. He further asserted that the council sacking him would be a violation of his freedom of speech. The council didn't care and sacked him anyway.
Turnage might be right, but he was stupid and we don't pay government officials to be stupid. It is unclear what remedy, if any, he will seek.
