Deerfield, Illinois is a bedroom community about 25 miles from that paragon of peace and prosperity, Chicago. It is primarily known as the headquarters of Walgreens and Caterpillar. It will now be famous as the city with the most unconvicted outlaws per capita in the country.
The city government of Deerfield just voted unanimously to prohibit the possession, manufacture or sale of so-called high capacity magazines (actually usually normal factory standard magazines) any semi-automatic rifle or shotgun, or semi-automatic handgun with a detachable magazine capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition.
There is a fine of $1,000 per day for non-compliance and no compensation offered for the soon to be illegal items. Residents have 60 days to comply. Illinois does not have a preemption statute so it is completely possible this ordinance will be upheld by court review.
The nearby city of Highland Park enacted a similar ban of "assault weapons" in 2013, which has thus far been upheld by the courts.
The city police have the authority under the law to seize and destroy such weapons.
