NOTABLE DEATH

Michael "Mad Mike" Hoare

by Bob Walsh

Mad Mike Hoare, the most well-known mercenary solider of the late 20th century, died yesterday at the age of 100. He spent much of his life, and made a fair living, fighting commies and other undesirables, mostly in Africa. They even made a movie based on his life starring Richard Burton, called The Wild Geese if I remember correctly. Pretty decent flick.

He had been hired to run a coup in the Seychelles Islands off the east coast of Africa late in his career and he got screwed up by an underling screwing the pooch. He and his people were supposed to infiltrate with a bunch of football (soccer) fans coming home. They did NOT have to go thru much in the way of an identity check or baggage search. One of his men got in the wrong line, somebody found his AK in his luggage and he and some of his people ended up being a guest of the government for some period of time.

It is commonly believed that he did much of his work at the behest of, or at least with the blessing of, Her Majesty's Government.

Very few people in his line of work made it to a ripe old age. He lived an adventurous life.
