Officials at the California Lottery thought that if they gave away over $200,000 worth of scratcher lottery tickets on the Ellen DeGeneres show it would drum up some good publicity. Maybe they were right. But it also brought some heat.
California state senator Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) has asked the state auditor to look into this act as an inappropriate gifting of public funds. The lottery kicked down 425 packets, each with 72 tickets with a retail value of $500.
The complaint was lodged by a whistle-blower within the lottery bureaucracy. The lottery has been accused of nepotism, improper gifting and wasteful spending. There was in fact an audit of the lottery under way when this accusation was filed. The giveaway took place in early December of last year.
