Yes, this is such a big deal it was on page one of the Chronicle, albeit below the fold. The burglar, driving a car without plates, drove up beside a parked vehicle, stopped and got out, smashed the window, grabbed a visible backpack, and drover away. As it happens there was a Chronicle reporter and photographer right there reporting on the rash of auto burglaries in the area. They got good photos of the bad guy. There were also cops there, but they couldn't catch the guy.
The bad guy was identified from the photo and a warrant was issued. Three days later he was arrested, immediately after another auto burglary, this time in Vacaville. He was apprehended after a chase from Vacaville to Oakland. He is being held on several charges.
The bad guy, Delon Terrance Barker, was held on a no-bail felony plus had his bail revoked on a pending robbery beef.
Auto burglaries in the People's Republic of San Francisco have a clearance rate of 1.6%. Not 16%, but 1.6%. Last year there were 30,000 auto burglaries in S.F. that were actually reported. No way of knowing how many more were not reported.
