THE PURGE IS HERE...KIND OF SORT OF MAYBE

by Bob Walsh

In eight days SCOTUS will here an interesting voting law case out of Ohio. It seems that in Ohio they routinely pure the voters rolls of "inactive" voters without a lot of research. One of those purged was Joseph Helle, then in the army, now the mayor of Oak harbor.

Since 1994 Ohio has used "inactivity" as a means of purging voters. That criteria was opposed by the Obama administration. It is now supported by the Trump administration. The state CAN remove a person for two years of voter inactivity, but only after a local authority forwards the name to the state. Then the state waits an ADDITIONAL four years before removal.

This one will be worth watching. There are several other states that use the same general rule, and more will possibly jump on board if SCOTUS rules it to be constitutional.
