DIRECT DEMOCRACY CAN GET STRANGE

by Bob Walsh

The formerly great state of California has a very active ballot initiative and referendum process. It has given CA an 800+ page constitution due to tweaks and additions over the last 100 years or so. The following are some of the proposals going thru the signature gathering process.

John Cox, a Republican candidate for governor, wants to increase the size of the CA legislature from 120 to 12,000.

Tim Draper, a rich dude from Silicon Valley, wants to split the state into three separate states.

Two other proposals would move to make CA a separate country.

Several bond measures for a total of several billion dollars are aiming at more hosing, more cheap housing, more money for children's hospitals and hazmat cleanup of existing older housing.

One of the more interesting ones is a proposed change to the Labor Code. Currently the law allows employees to sue their employers ON BEHALF OF THE STATE for alleged violations of the state Labor Code. The new proposal, the fourth since the current law was enacted 14 years ago, would make it more difficult and less profitable for attorneys to follow this route.

It will be amusing to see what the ballots finally look like this year.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A 12,000 member legislature? This guy's permanent residence must be Patton State Hospital.
