Governor Jerry Brown, aka Moonbeam, is an odd guy. He is an unabashed liberal and thug huger, but possibly his time as mayor of Oakland convinced him that there are some people who need to stay locked up. It is hard to predict what kind of call Jerry will make,
Just before Christmas Moonbeam commuted the sentence of Jeremy Stewart, 33, from 70-to life to a straight 8 years. That is a HELL of a cut. He was convicted of residential burglary, two counts, and stealing a bunch of stuff. He had priors for burglary, RSP, and felon in possession of a weapon. He would by most descriptions be called a habitual criminal. He was sentenced as a 3-striker with a 20-year add-on.
He has admittedly been a model prisoner. He is in a 12-step program and has earned a two-year degree while a guest of the people. He probably likes dogs too, I'm not sure.
The San Diego D.A. opposed the clemency, as did one of the residential burglary victims, citing safety concerns. If Jeremy doesn't screw the pooch he will be out in June. It would be nice to think he has quit taking drugs and gotten his mind right. I would not bet next months rent on it.
