A Collin County restaurant has found itself mired in controversy over bathroom doors that critics say are transphobic.
The door displays at Dodie's Place Cajun Bar & Grill in Allen were installed in mid-August, according to the restaurant's Facebook page.
The women's restroom door is the image of Caitlyn Jenner publicly debuting as a transgender woman from the cover of Vanity Fair, while the men's room door is a photo of Jenner competing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal as a man.
After The Daily Dot published an article calling the images "incredibly insensitive," supporters of the restaurant took to Facebook and Twitter to say that the doors were just a joke and that people offended by them should go elsewhere.
Others, however, were quick to call out the doors as distasteful and denigrating toward transgender people — including Jess Herbst. Herbst, a transgender woman, is the mayor of New Hope, a small town about 10 miles north of Dodie's.
Dodie's representatives have not commented on whether the door displays will remain, but owner Kyle McPherson — who uses a different name on Facebook — posted that the pictures "FINALLY" got the media's attention.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This breaks me up. I agree that anyone offended can go elsewhere.
