Rich assholes HATE IT when, thru their own stupidity, they are shown to be both stupid and assholes. They hate it a lot.
Regular readers will recall that the rich assholes that live on the gated, privately owned street of Presidio Terrace in the People's Republic of San Francisco screwed the pooch when they neglected to pay the property taxes on their privately owned street and sidewalks for 14 years. The amount of tax due, with interest, came to not quite $1,000. The bills and delinquent notices went to their old accountant, who was long since retired. It is not on the taxing agency to keep track of such things, it is up to the property owner to do so. The tax is legally due even if no notice is received no matter what the reason.
A couple of yuppies who invest in such things bought the tax lien for a tad over $90,000 at a public (internet) sale. They were then smart enough to wait (legally) beyond the appeal period to let the property owners known what had happened. The property owners squealed like mashed cats. They have approached Diane Feinstein, a former resident of Presidio Terrace, to try to pressure the Board of Supervisors to invalidate the sale. She has done so, with mixed results.
Treasurer Jose Cisneros has said that his office followed the law in this matter and that, in the absence of an actual error by his office, there is no legal precedent to invalidate the sale. He said that every year more than 1,000 such bills are returned as undeliverable to his office and they are under no obligation whatsoever to try to track down the property owners.
The streets new owners have hired Shepherd Kopp, son of longtime Bay Area political figure Quentin Kopp, to present their case to the Board of Supervisors in the November 28th meeting. The sniveling from the 35 arrogant, rich assholes will no doubt be astounding. I guess when you are arrogant and rich and an asshole you don't have to give a shit.
