CALEXIT DEAD, FOR NOW AT LEAST

by Bob Walsh

The attempt to amend the CA state constitution to allow the formerly great state of California to exit the union has rolled over and died, at least for now. The man who was pushing the issue, Louis M. Marinelli, has announced that he is immigrating to Russia. That does kind of put a fly in the ointment.

The backers of the plan are not, however, giving up completely. The group of leftovers intend to give in another shot next month. The group did get permission last January to start gathering the 585,000 signatures needed to get the issue on the ballot. They have, however, had serious funding problems once Donald Trump, their fearless leader, became associated with Russia and Vladimir Putin. For some reason or other a lot of people see that as a negative.

It should be noted that this attempt, if successful, would only remove the part of the California constitution that specifies that the state is a permanent part of the United States and can not secede. That does not mean any attempt to secede would be successful on either the local or national level. (There are, however, many people in the U. S. that would be glad to see California leave.)

There is still a semi-serious attempt to split the State of Jefferson off from California. Actually that idea has been floating around at least since the late 1930s. I think it has just about as much a chance as Howie does of being elected Pope, but you never know.
