Ex-Jackson State University President William Bynum Jr., along with another former JSU official, pleaded not guilty to charges resulting from a police prostitution sting in Clinton in February.

Attorneys for Bynum and Shonda McCarthy, former director of JSU Art Galleries, filed not-guilty pleas and neither appeared in a scheduled court hearing on Wednesday.

A trial for McCarthy is scheduled for June 24, and one for Bynum is scheduled for July 8.

Bynum and McCarty were among 17 people arrested in the prostitution sting at a local hotel. Bynum was charged with procuring the services of a prostitute, false statement of identity and possession of marijuana.

McCarthy was charged with procuring services of a prostitute and possession of marijuana while operating a motor vehicle.

The former JSU president is being represented by Jackson-based law firm, Sweet & Associates. McCarty is being represented by Carlos Tanner of Tanner & Associates, which is also based in Jackson.

Attorneys for both firms weren't immediately available for comment.

Mark Jones, spokesman for the city of Clinton, said previously that the two-day operation led to eight felony charges. He said police made contact with the alleged offenders through online "dark web" sites, where services were discussed. A local chain hotel was the agreed meeting place.

Jones on Wednesday said the court allows pleas to be filed online for misdemeanor cases.

Bynum resigned after his arrest and Thomas Hudson was appointed interim JSU president. Hudson previously served as chief operating officer and special assistant to the president.

Bynum is married and the father of six children.

The IHL, which oversees the state's largest universities, appointed Bynum as JSU president in May 2017. Bynum replaced Carolyn Meyers, who resigned from the post in October 2016.

Before his tenure at JSU, Bynum served as president of Mississippi Valley State University for four years.

EDITOR'S NOTE: For Christ's sake, give the guy a break. He's got six kids and wanted some pussy but was afraid he's knock up his wife if he fucked her. Besides that, he was out of his mind because he was high on pot.
